Don’t Expect a Battle Royale Game from Microsoft Anytime Soon
It seems like every developer out there who can is jumping on the battle royale game bandwagon that was started by PUBG. Microsoft’s Xbox head Phil Spencer has stepped up and said that gamers shouldn’t expect a battle royale game from it any time soon. Microsoft’s game studios arent getting into the fray unless it can find a new spin.
Spencer says that Microsoft would rather support those games “I’d rather support unless we find something special in 1P that’s a different take.” Microsoft does have an exclusive partnership with the devs of PUBG, so its stance on battle royale isnt particularly surprising.
Presumably, that deal with PUBG would put a crimp in any desire that Microsoft might have to create a battle royale standalone title. However, GameSpot figures that Microsoft would be able to do something like add a battle royale mode to an existing game or build one into a coming game like Halo 6.
Millions are playing BR games right now. I don't want to just build one because others have built them. FNBR is massive, PUBG is huge, new BR variants being built by some very quality devs, I'd rather support unless we find something special in 1P that's a different take.

Microsoft isnt alone in not wanting to build something just like everything else out there. Rockstar and EA have taken the same stance on battle royale games. Perhaps these major publishers and devs will find a way to innovate in the genre, that would be good for fans.
