In overclocking the HD 4870 the fan was left at the default speed and the card was overclocked using ATI’s Catalyst Control with the auto-tune feature. This was chosen as it’s an overclock that anyone can achieve. Heat is a huge issue with this card with the backside of the card reaching 85 Celsius and the core itself reaching 90C while idling. Under load the card bounces between 80C and 90C as the fan profile seems to be a binary function of nearly off or “leaf blower”. With the proper tools these cards can easily scale to 850MHz and higher on the stock cooler making them quite powerful if you are able to cool them.
