Details of Microsoft’s Stricter Product Activation Process Leaks Online
Details of Microsoft’s new OEM Activation (OA) 3.0 have leaked to the web – which is somewhat ironic when you consider that it’s information on antipiracy technology that has leaked.
This is the activation process that is used when activating Windows on a new computer built by an OEM system builder such as HP or Dell. It’s stricter than OA2.1 used with Windows 7 and begins with Windows 8. The top slide below, apparently taken from training materials, reveals the differences, which includes the elimination of a single key in every BIOS. Now, a separate key needs to be obtained for every BIOS, making a unique key for every PC. Keys are also delivered electronically now rather than by postal mail, along with other changes. It seems that a key benefit will be the real-time return of keys, without shipping or insurance costs. Note that OA3.0 will not be retrofitted to previous operating systems.
Information on the new Windows 8 OEM activation that is covered by an Non Disclosure Agreement (DNA) has been leaked to the internet. The new product activation standard is called OEM Activiaton 3.0 (OA 3.0) and should provide benefits over OA 2.1 , used in Windows 7.
