Dell Revives Duo Brand, Shows off New Windows 8 Convertible Notebook

By

Just like convertible cars are typically billed as premium offerings, so too are “convertible” PCs. Dell has decided to revive its Duo brand for laptops/notebooks, which it initially introduced in 2010, but later dropped. The central feature is the screen which can be rotated 180 degrees within the frame, allowing the laptop to turn into a tablet.

The upcoming XPS Duo 12 notebook/tablet hybrid was showcased at IFA this week and is pitched as a premium quality device, featuring machined aluminium, carbon fiber body and Corning Gorilla glass for the display. Only basic details of the new machine have been revealed so far, with no price or availability announced yet.

The XPS Duo 12 is said to weigh a tad over three pounds and features a 12-inch 1080p 10-point multitouch display (possibly IPS, but this is unconfirmed) with edge-to-edge glass, Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5 and i7 processors, a 256GB SSD, USB 3.0 ports and a mini-DisplayPort connector. Folks at IFA report that it has a solid keyboard, touchpad and build quality, but detailed specs aren’t available currently. Likewise, pricing is unknown and will presumably remain that way until we’re closer to Windows 8’s launch.
