Danamics LMX – Liquid Metal CPU Cooler

By

Remember the post about the Danamics Liquid Metal CPU Cooler that I made in 2008? More than likely you don’t, but if you do then you will remember how this CPU cooler created a ton of buzz as it was revolutionary in the sense that it brought something new to the table. The LM10 Liquid Metal cooler just sort of fell off the grid years ago and to be honest we never heard back from Danamics or saw a product sample. Now it appears that Danamics is back at it with the LMX cooler and it is rumored they have a updated model of this cooler called the LMX Superleggera coming out very soon.

Liquid metal has several major advantages when cooling high power density heat sources:

  • It has superior thermo physical properties decreasing temperature and temperature non uniformity
  • It has high electrical conductivity enabling efficient, reliable and compact EMP propulsion without the use of moving parts, shafts, seals etc.
  • It has a vide temperature operating range and remains liquid from -12,6C all the way to 785C.
  • Unlike a two phase heat pipe, a liquid metal cooling loop has a near constant thermal resistance within the operating temperature range. This makes it ideal for cooling of high temperature semiconductors operating well above 100C. That is well beyond what commercially available water coolers can handle.
  • A liquid metal cooling loop is orientation independant.
  • Tighter packaging of components is allowed, due to the liquid metal cooling loops light weight, small size and maintenance free operation.
