Crytek To Embrace Free-To-Play Model For All Future Games

By

Crytek is to change its business model from the current packaged product with DLC, like the Crysis series, to the free-to-play (F2P) model. Speaking on the last day of E3, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said that they’re doing this, because the current model “milks” players of their money – or in other words, rips them off. Yerli feels that a zero dollar entry point into a game and then paying for upgrades is a much fairer way to make money from their customers. The first Crytek game to be based on this business model is the new Warface multiplayer only shooter which is currently live in Russia and undergoing closed beta in China. It’s not yet known when the game will come to the US & Europe, but it will be published by Trion Worlds.

“As is evident in Warface, our approach is to ensure the best quality, console game quality. That implies budgets of between $10m to $30m – so no compromise there – but at the price-point of $0 entry.

I think this is a new breed of games that has to happen to change the landscape, and be the most user-friendly business model.

If you look at what kind of games are done in the packaged goods market, with DLCs and premium services and whatnot, it’s literally milking the customers to death.”
