Chinese Woman Sentenced to Labor Camp Over Tweet

Apparently in China, a tweet containing anti-government sentiments are considered to be disruptive of “social order” and could lead to jail time. Even if it is proclaimed to be a joke. Maybe that’s the reason it’s actually banned in China but it seems The Man can’t hold everyone down and many circumvent the restriction to tweet anyway.

A Chinese woman has been sentenced to one year of re-education in a Chinese labor camp for sending a single tweet. The tweet was actually a retweet, sent by her fiance Hua Chunhui in the midst of anti-Japanese demonstrations in China last month. The original tweet urged the protesters to smash Japans pavilion at the Shanghai Expo; Cheng Jianping merely retweeted it, adding the words, Charge, angry youth.
