Lacie & PowerTech
Thunderbolt devices are one of the things many of our readers are wanting to see covered at CES this year and we just spotted our first Thunderbolt products from LaCie. The first is the new LaCie 2big Thunderbolt drive. This is a dual drive 3.5″ enclosure that will be offered in capacities of 4TB, 6TB and 8TB.It has speeds up to 311 MB/s and has a pair of drives inside for RAID use. LaCie says the new Thunderbolt LaCie 2big drive will offer speeds up to three times faster than FireWire 800, its internal drives are hot-swappable, and its casing is made of solid aluminum. The drive offers up to 8TB of storage space in RAID 0 (or 4TB in RAID 1), and when two or more of the drives are daisy-chained together, performance will be increased. Sitting next to that drive is the LaCie d2 Quadra USB 3.0 enclosure that uses a standard 3.5-inch 7200 RPM hard drive and starts at $189.99 for a 1TB model.
Next up we saw the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Series SSD and this little drive is mighty impressive. It contains dual Thunderbolt ports for daisy chaining and has a 240GB SSD inside. The price tag for this enclosure is a hefty $899.99, but the performance was impressive.
You are talking about ~470MB/s read and ~250MB/s write speeds with this external storage solution. We don’t know exact SSD was being used for this demo, so it’s hard to totally judge this solution.
PowerTech was at CES Unveiled showing off some new wall chargers that plug into a regular wall and then allows you to charge any two USB device with a pair of 1A USB ports in addition to two regular power ports. You don’t lose any wall outlets with this solution, but you gain a pair of USB chargers. The company wouldn’t mention pricing, but when pushed by LR they told us that it would be around $40 when released and it will be available in a variety of trim colors.
