British Parliament To Receive 650 Apple iPads

By

The British parliament will soon receive 650 Apple iPads due to a successful pilot program which studied the effect of tablet PCs in the government. The move which will cost somewhere between $420,300 – $693,500 (260,000 – 429,000), will give all 650 members of the British parliament (MP) an iPad. As it stands, 70 MPs apparently have already purchased iPads which they listed as expenses, passing the cost on to the taxpayers, however it supposedly is saving money when compared to printing and other ancient workflows in this digital age. While every MP and their staff can have two laptops and three desktops in service to the government, their will be a trade-in of at least one of the allotted devices from 300 out of 650 members of parliament. A specific time frame of when the iPads will be rolled out has not been announced but it should be expected to happen fairly soon.

Every MP and his or her staff is entitled to three desktop computers, and two laptops in the service of the government. A trade-in of one of the allotted devices is expected from 300 of the 650 members not assigned to a select committee. The returned equipment is partially offsetting the iPad purchase by updating obsolete equipment in use by non-elected staffers, reducing the need for purchases of new equipment to the tune of 50,000 ($80,820). Annual miscellaneous administrative costs have been reduced by iPad users during a recently-concluded limited trial.
