BP Begins Top Kill Of Gulf Oil Well

By

Federal authorities signaled a green light Wednesday for BP to proceed with a maneuver known as “top kill” to stop the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. I have been told that BP started the “top kill” process around 1:10pm CST. The “top kill” procedure has worked successfully on above-ground oil wells in the Middle East but has never been tried a mile beneath the ocean’s surface. Other attempts by BP to stop the oil flow have failed. Keep your fingers crossed! You can watch the live feed here to see if anything changes. I’m not sure how long something like this will take.

BP will pump 50,000 pounds of thick, viscous fluid twice the density of water into the site of the leak to stop the oil flow. If all goes according to plan, the well then can be sealed shut with cement.
