Are AMD’s Financial Struggles Over?

By

AMD has been competing with Intel in the microprocessor market since the 1980s and the two companies have fiercely battled each other for years. Intel has been leading the way when it comes to profit, while AMD has been doing all they could just to make profit and not lose money. In 2010 AMD had $6.5 billion in sales but couldnt even make half a billion dollars in profit. This is better than 2006-2008 though as AMD was losing money during that time period. AMD then made a turn around in 09 and looks to continue that path with new growth opportunities.

Some analysts believe AMD may fire back at Intel by adopting a chip design long anathema to both companies. The design, licensed to various chipmakers by British firm ARM, currently dominates smartphones and tablets. AMD might make chips based on both the x86 and ARM designs, some experts have speculated. But if it switches exclusively to ARM, it would leave Intel essentially alone in the x86 business, which “would make Intel kind of look like they are the guy that missed the meeting,” said tech analyst Rob Enderl
