Apple Reverses Decision, Goes Green Once More

By

It seems Apple has had a change of heart, or maybe just good business sense, as they are calling the decision to abandon the EPEAT green certification system “a mistake.” It looks to be a pretty quick change of opinion considering we just reported on their removal of products from the EPEAT rating system not too long ago. It could be however that the potential loss of government agencies as customers has spurred Apple to reverse that decision. Apple Senior Vice President for hardware engineering Bob Mansfield has said “We’ve recently heard from many loyal Apple customers who were disappointed to learn that we had removed our products from the EPEAT rating system,” and that “I recognize that this was a mistake. Starting today, all eligible Apple products are back on EPEAT.” Granted Apple hasn’t said why they left the green certification system in the first place, but speculation says it is due to the MacBook Pro with Retina Display and it’s glued to metal frame battery. Still the fact Apple has recanted and is now re-submitting their products for EPEAT testing and certification is a good thing. Regardless of all, this Apple has now renewed their commitment to creating greener gadgets.

Our relationship with EPEAT has become stronger as a result of this experience, and we look forward to working with EPEAT as their rating system and the underlying IEEE 1680.1 standard evolve. Our team at Apple is dedicated to designing products that everyone can be proud to own and use.
