Apple Buys Start-Up Behind the iPad’s Chip

Apple confirmed the acquisition of Texas-based chipmaker, Intrinsity. Intrinsity is the company that assisted Samsung in building the iPad processor. Though details of the purchase were not disclosed, it is believed that that the acquisition was valued at around $120 million. Apple has not announced what plans it had for the Intrinsity, but this is the second major chipmaker purchase in the last two years. Apple purchased P.A. Semi for $278 million in 2008.

Apple Buys Chipmaker Intrinsity

People familiar with the situation say the Silicon Valley giant recently purchased Intrinsity Inc., a closely held company whose chip technology has been used to boost the performance of cellphones and other products. Some analysts believe that Intrinsity’s technology is used in the A4, the Apple-designed chip used in the new iPad.
