Anti-Free to Play Mod for Team Fortress 2

By

Asher Baker is known in the Steam community for his various Valves related plugins and workarounds created an anti-free to play mod called Free2BeKicked for Team Fortress 2. This is a plugin that detects if the user playing Team Fortress 2 has a premium account. The player can easily upgrade to premium after downloading the game for free. All the player needs to do is purchase an item from the in game store. If you do not have a premium account you will get kicked out. This only happens on private servers not on Valves servers, also any player that purchased Team Fortress 2 before Valves Free to Play update automatically becomes a premium member. There are 16 servers that are running Bakers Mod, according to Source Mod and Baker, but they are not totally sure because Linux rule sets are broken at the moment and the majority of Team Fortress 2 servers are hosted on Linux machines. Valve has yet to respond whether the company is fine with Bakers mod. Baker made this Mod not because he was upset of the many new gamers to the Team Fortress franchise, but because he wanted to show loyalty to the many server operators who keep the Team Fortress community alive.

“I anticipated a negative response from the general player base and a positive response from the server operators,” Baker said. “I hadn’t anticipated it to be this strong either way, even including receiving death threats. I don’t really have a personal opinion about TF2 going free to play, it’s brought in lots of new players, but I’m not sure it’s worth the long-term cost. I think that once the droves of inexperienced players dies down, we’re going to be left with a (slow) steady stream of new players (good), but primarily just cheaters and people evading server bans.”
