Android 4.4 KitKat – Google Teams Up With Nestle
Have you heard that Android KitKat is the next version of Google’s mobile operating system? Android 4.4 ‘KitKat’ was created in honor of the candy bar developers munched on while coding it, so it looks like Nestle is getting a ton or PR from this! KitKat is a well known and trademarked product, so the Swiss food and drink maker had to sign off on the use of the name.
“We couldn’t imagine a better name for our Android K release than the tasty chocolate that’s been a favorite among the team since the early days of Android,” said Marc Vanlerberghe, Google’s marketing director for Android.
KitKat has also launched their own marketing campaign and they are going big. They have announced that more than 50 million KitKat bars, specially branded with Google’s green Android robot on their packaging, will be released, giving customers a chance to win prizes that include a Nexus 7 tablet and credits to the Google Play store. If you are super duper lucky, you might be able to win a robot-shaped KitKats. The KitKat website has also been completely overhauled and looks more like a tech site than a candy bar site!
They even have a promotional video that some are saying has taken a swipe at Apple, Microsoft and Nokia. In fact some die hard fans are calling for a Nestl product boycott already! You can watch that video below!
It looks like Nokias German Twitter account had some fun with this PR stunt and wanted in on the action. The Microsoft/Nokia team over there sent out a Tweet showing a photo of a Samsung Galaxy S4 being broken in half, telling followers that it is okay to have a break. You just have to love PR wars!
Oh, and in other news, Android has had 1 billion activations. No big deal right? Give me a break, give me a break, break me off a piece of that… Android 4.4. That just doesn’t have the right ring!
