AMD’s 690G/V Series Chipset Preview and Benchmarks

Power Consumption

Since power consumption is a big deal these days, we ran some simple power consumption tests on our test beds. Both systems ran with the same processor, memory, power supply, cooling system, video card and hard drive. To measure idle usage we ran the system at idle for one hour on the desktop with no screen saver and took the measurement. The power management setting in Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit was set to ‘Balance’ during power consumption testing as this is the default setting for Vista.

When it came to idle power consumption the oldest chipset (GeForce 6150) consumed the most power and that makes perfect sense. The AMD 690G beat out the single chipset GeForce 6150SE with it’s two chipset design, which goes to show the RS690 and SB600 are energy efficient.

Under load, the AMD 690G chipset again took the lead and beat out the GeForce 6150 by 11 Watts, which is nearly 10%.
