AMD’s 2013 Products to Use Bulk 28nm Process

AMD is to adopt a 28nm bulk manufacturing process in 2013 for its high volume and less complex products, which includes APUs and motherboard chipsets, according to AMD senior VP and CTO Mark Papermaster. For complex products, such as their high end Southern Islands GPU family, AMD will continue to use TSMC’s 28nm manufacturing process. This will continue with their successor, See Islands, which have entered the tape-out stage and are on schedule for a late 2012 manufacturing start, with a 2013 launch. It will be interesting to see how these GPUs compete with NVIDIA’s offerings.

Commenting about whether the Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) Foundation was formed to compete against Intel and Nvidia, Papermaster said that the company’s cooperation with ARM is mainly to satisfy client demand for comprehensive functions and to allow quick product development, and is not founded to target any specific competitor.

As for market speculation whether AMD will launch ARM-based processors, Papermaster pointed out that the company’s cooperation with ARM will only focus on the HAS Foundation and integration between APU and ARM TrustZone security technology.
