AMD sees revenue leap 8 percent in Q1

Advanced Micro Devices reported a big surge in revenue in the first quarter on Wednesday, as the computer chip maker said it gained on its rival Intel because more business customers adopted its chips for computer servers, desktop computers and laptops. Great news for AMD and the entire PC industry.
For the first quarter ended March 26, AMD revenues jumped 8 percent to $1.33 billion, up from $1.23 billion a year ago. Excluding sales in the year-ago quarter of AMD’s memory-chip business, Spansion, which was spun off in December, AMD revenues soared 70.5 percent from $780 million a year ago. Ruiz said AMD was gaining share in data centers, in the blade-server market and in emerging markets such as India, China and Russia.
