Mozilla has announced that Gary Kovacs will be its new Chief Executive Office. Prior to joining Mozilla, Kobacs was senior VP of markets, solutions and products at Sybase. He replaces outgoing CEO John Lilly who will stay on until Kobacs officially takes over on November 8. Lilly is also expected to retain his seat on Mozilla’s Board of Directors. This appointment highlights the importance of mobile interfaces in upcoming Firefox releases.

Mozilla isn’t an ordinary company, however, and will require its new leader to adapt to its mission-centric view of technology. Mitchell Baker, a former Mozilla CEO and current Mozilla Foundation Chairperson, says that Kovacs fits the bill. Baker and Lilly, who headed the six-month process to find the right candidate, both cite Kovac’s communication skills and affinity for collaboration as factors that cemented him as the best choice.
