Motorola and Research In Motion (RIM) Settle Patent Dispute

By

Motorola and Research In Motion (RIM) announced Friday that they have settled an ongoing patent complaint over mobile technology that Motorola brought to the International Trade Commission (ITC) in early 2010. The companies said RIM, makers of the BlackBerry series of smartphones, would give Motorola upfront payment plus royalties for the use of its mobile technology. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the companies said the deal included an agreement to cross-license various patents related to industry wireless standards and wireless e-mail messaging.

Under the Agreement, Motorola and RIM will benefit from a long-term, intellectual property cross-licensing arrangement involving the parties receiving cross-licenses of various patent rights, including patent rights relating to certain industry standards and certain technologies, such as 2G, 3G, 4G, 802.11 and wireless email. In addition, the parties will transfer certain patents to each other.
