ATI suffered a huge setback when it launched the HD 2900XT in 2007. They managed to adapt the design that went into the HD 2900XT and turned themselves around with the launch of the HD 3870 in 2008 and they have kept on fine-tuning this design. Their efforts have been well rewarded with the launch of the HD 4870 which can trace it’s heritage back to the hot and hungry HD 2900XT of yore. The new core that is powering the 4800 series is energy efficient and powerful yet relatively small. These smaller and cheaper cores are resulting in sub-$300 video cards that are powerful enough to play the most recent games at maximum resolutions with high visual settings.

The HD 4870 is no longer ATI’s flagship card however it still offers an amazing punch for a relatively low price. The HD 4870 X2 was recently launched and has surpassed the HD 4870 but for all it’s glitz and glamor, it’s price puts it out of reach of many individuals.
