Has XFX Gone Too Far?

It’s no secret that EVGA is the top add-in-board partner (AIB) when it comes to NVIDIA graphics card. It’s tough not being the top dog, but being behind the industry leader doesn’t mean that you can’t nip at the heels of the guy in front of you to let him know that you are still there. XFX – A Division of Pine, has done just that on the retail box of their GeForce 8600 GT graphics card. Before we show you how XFX did this let’s take a look at their own background that is available under company information on their website.

XFX dares to go where the competition would like to, but can’t. That’s because, at XFX, we don’t just create great digital video components–we build all-out, mind-blowing, performance crushing, competition-obliterating video cards and motherboards. Oh, and not only are they amazing, you don’t have to live on dry noodles and peanut butter to afford them.

Seems a little spunky eh? Spunky is sometimes good!

At first glance the retail box on the XFX GeForce 8600 GT looks like any other, but take a closer look at the dog on the package. Notice that the dog is drooling like he’s set his sight onto something nice and juicy to tear into. Let’s take a closer look at that drool.

Oh Snap! The rabid XFX dog is drooling over EVGA! No special filters or trying to cross your eyes is needed to see the name EVGA in the drool. It is safe to say that we were shocked to see this on the box cover, but objects and words get hidden in art work all the time. The most surprising thing about this one is that nothing was done to hide it!

It’s good to see that XFX has motivation, a good enough sense of humor and the balls to do something crazy like this. For now it seems that the 8600 GT is the only graphics card box with this on it as we looked long and hard on our 8600 GTS box and couldn’t find anything about EVGA on it.

In our expert opinion, it seems that the XFX Dog has rabies and is going from the furious phase that is known as ‘mad dog syndrome’ to the paralytic phases, which leads to drooling. From our visual diagnosis it seems that rabies would be the clear choice. By now paralysis has more than likely set in and the XFX dog has been put down, which might also be the situation for the artist that did the box design!

In the end we got a good laugh out of this and thought it was pretty gutsy of XFX to point out that they were gunning for EVGA. The question now is will EVGA do something on their box next time or ignore the situation all together? What do you think? Did XFX go too far this time or was this a justified marketing move?
