Protecting Yourself From Laptop Radiation

Your body is continually bring blasted by natural background radiation from all sorts of things and unfortunately these days you need to worry about artificial background radiation. Pretty much every single electronic gadget that you own emits some level or radiation and we really don’t have a clue what it is doing to our bodies. If you look into radiation effects from electronic devices it is quite shocking what you will find out. For example, most people know that the FCC has a cell phone radiation guideline. But, did you know that guideline has not been updated since 1996? I think we can all agree that technology has changed over the past 17 years, so should the maximum limit on radiation exposure levels based on how much heat is emitted and absorbed by cell phones be updated?

In 2011, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer reviewed several studies and listed mobile phones as a possible carcinogen, putting them in the same category as lead, gasoline engine exhaust, and chloroform. That same year the World Health Organization told the world to reduce it’s exposure to mobile phones by using hands free devices or texting! This was because of a link between increased brain tumour rates & higher mobile phone use. In 2012 the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) asked the FCC to reevaluate its radiation limits for mobile phones. You can read all 201 pages of the regulatory findings here, but the FCC basically concluded that they feel the current RF radiation levels are fine and that they are comfortable with its current caps. Does that make sense to you? For example 4G LTE network didn’t even exist in 1996 and neither did the supporting modems and products that are used on todays devices. The numerous studies of cells, animals and humans haven’t produced indisputable evidence that cell phone radiation can cause cancer, but most would agree that it is only a matter of time until there is such evidence.

Clearly, there are concerns over the safety of cell phones and what they are doing to your brain, but what about other devices? Some people even claim that they are developing electrohypersensitivity due to the increasing levels of public exposure to wireless devices like cameras, smartphones, computers, laptops, wireless routers and printers. What do laptops and tablets spew out in terms of radiation? I’ve been reviewing PC hardware for more than a decade and I can honestly say that I’ve never once seen any radiation details about any desktop PC, laptop or tablet ever run across my desk from a manufacturer. It seems that laptops and tablets have slipped under the radar, until just recently.

Anyone with common sense should recognize the importance of limiting your exposure to radiation. One company called DefenderPad has developed a product that will help protect you from laptop radiation and heat. Let’s face it: most people place their laptop on their lap and that general area holds some pretty important body parts for both men and women. The DefenderPad was designed and made right here in America by Daniel DeBaun to protect you from Radio Frequency (RF) radiation and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radiation. Mr. Debaun was in the Telecommunication Industry for 25 years where he spent some of that time as an engineer at Bell Labs. He saw that there was a need for a product to help protect people from RF and ELF radiation and noticed that there was no product on the market that could do that for many of the electronic devices on the market today. His first product was the DefenderPad, which helps protect laptop and tablet users from lap radiation. There are other radiation protection pads out there, but this is the only one that blocks both RF and ELF radiation.

The DefenderPad Laptop Radiation & Heat Shield doesn’t come cheap and will set you back $89.99 shipped from Amazon. That is a rather large chunk of change for a lap desk, but it is made in Sarasota, Florida and is comprised of 5-6 layers of soft metal and cloth materials that were designed and selected to shield your genitals from being blasted by particles that shouldn’t be anywhere close to them. Besides, can you really put a price on your health?

The DefenderPad was designed for PC and Mac laptops up to 17-inches in size and the actual measurements are 15.80″ x 11″ x 0.25″ inches. We are obviously reviewing the black model, but there are also blue and pink versions available. At first glance it looks like a large gaming mouse pad and it even feels like one with a soft textured feeling, but this is a lap desk. The DefenderPad logo is made into the injection molded casing and looks nice.

Flipping it over you can see that bottom surface is plain with no branding or noteworthy features being seen. The DefenderPad that we have measures ~7.25mm thick and is pretty rigid, so it’s a nice solid surface to work off of.

Here is a closer look at the seam where the two halves of the casing are sealed together. Due to the types of material used for the casing they couldn’t be sonic welded together, so it is glued together. We don’t like to see glue being used, but the seam is pretty straight and it looks like it is held together pretty well.
