Motorola Backtracks on Moto Z2 Force Android 9 Update Promise

Motorola has done something that will undoubtedly anger its userbase. The company had promised that it would be moving the Moto Z2 Force smartphone to Android 9.0 Pie. It has now announced on the Lenovo forums that it will not do that after all for most models.

The Moto Z2 Force smartphones that were sold by T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint will get no Android 9 update. The Verizon model will get the Android Pie update, but for only one reason reports Android Authority.

That reason is to ensure compatibility with the 5G Moto Mod that is coming to Verizon. The 5G Moto Mod will land later this summer. The device will get at least one more Android security update in July.

When the device launched in July 2017, Moto had promised two years of security updates. Moto has been notoriously slow issuing Android updates, and now it’s backtracking on updates, and that won’t make consumers happy.
