Bungie Gets Custody of Destiny in Activision Split

Bungie and Activision have worked together for a long time, and one of the offspring of that union was the shooter Destiny. Bungie and Activision have parted ways, and Bungie will maintain full control over Destiny and Destiny 2 after the split.

The split comes after years of friction between the two firms. Bungie announced the split in an employee meeting where one person in attendance claimed that workers cheered and popped champagne in celebration reports Kotaku.

“We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny,” Bungie wrote. “Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.”

One point of friction between the two companies has been the release schedule that Activision has enforced that made Bungie have a new Destiny game or expansion ready every fall. After the split Bungie will no longer have to follow that schedule. Activision was unhappy with sales of Destiny 2 adding to the ire between the two companies.
