Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Sells 1.2M Copies in a Week in Japan

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launched recently in Japan, and the game had a very successful opening week. The first week the title was available in Japan, it sold 1,238,358 copies. The number is only for physical sales and doesn’t count digital sales.

With such big sales numbers, the game is now the biggest selling Nintendo-published game launch ever for Japan if you take Pokemon games out of the equation reports Nintendo Life. Other records set include the best debut for a Smash series game in Japan and the highest opening weekend for a Switch game in the country.

Ultimate also helped move a significant number of consoles during the week the game launched. Switch sales totaled 278,313 units sold for the week compared to 107,450 units sold the week before the game launched.

With the Ultimate bump in sales, the Switch has now sold over 6 million units in Japan. Ultimate sold roughly twice the number of copies that Splatoon 2 sold on its opening weekend back in 2017.
