China Kills Twitch Access for Entire Country

Twitch is a very popular streaming platform that is used by gamers around the world. China has a long history of censoring the internet and blocking its citizens from accessing all the information and websites out there. Twitch has now been blocked in China and the iOS app removed from the Apple regional store.

Sometimes there are workarounds in China for blocked websites, but it’s not clear at this time if there will be a workaround in this instance. As for why China suddenly blocked Twitch, reports indicate there was a recent surge in popularity for Twitch in China.

Apparently, that surge has to do with Twitch being one of the only places to watch eSports during the 2018 Asian Games. This year marks the first time that eSports have been a part of those games.

The Twitch iOS app was the place to watch those games as it streamed the gaming portions. It rose 300 spots in App Store popularity before being banned. Twitch has confirmed to Gamasutra that it has been blocked but has offered no details on how long the block will last.
