Streamers Turn Off Ads to Protest Twitch Prime changes

By

Yesterday we talked about Twitch and its decision to remove the ability for Prime subscribers to skip ads during their streaming sessions. Subscribers and Twitch’s actual content makers are all unhappy about that decision. Twitch justified the change and forcing of Prime subscribers to watch commercials by saying essentially the goal was to make more money for streamers.

As a byproduct of that Twitch would undoubtedly make more money as well. The problem that the content makers on Twitch have is that they had been promised they would get paid for streamers who didnt watch ads just as if they had watched them already reports Kotaku. This means the change has zero to do with making streamers more money and everything to do with making Twitch more loot.

“Partners dont see any direct benefit from the Twitch Prime ad-free removal,” Justin Wong, formerly a Twitch VP of six years, said on Twitter. “There are possibly indirect benefits depending on whether viewers will subscribe to avoid ads. In other words, the benefiting creators shtick is BS.”

As a protest, some streamers are calling on subscribers to install an ad blocker to watch their streams. Others have gone so far as to turn off ads for subscribers entirely. Twitch may see Twitch Prime subscriptions fall too as no ads was the only real benefit of subscribing for many fans. Any way you slice it, only Twitch is happy about this move.
