AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X CPU Destroys Cinebench

AMD announced their 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper CPU going to be available with up to 32 cores, 64 threads of processing power during Computex 2018. The new enthusiast part would be using AMD’s latest 12nm Zen+ CPU architecture with four Ryzen dies connected with Infinity Fabric. AMD showed off a couple performance demos of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 32C/64T CPU at Computex 2018, but the numbers didn’t mean much as it was a Blender run that finished in 29 seconds. We don’t have the workload used or know the exact Blender application build used, so it’s hard to figure out just how fast this new processor really is.

The good news this morning is that our friends over at VideoCardz have posted up some performance information about the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X processor, which is expected to be the retail name for the 32C/64T CPU shown off at Computex 2018. A CPU-Z 1.85 screenshot from HKEPC appears to show a processor called Ryzen Threadripper 2990X that uses the 12nm process and goes by the code name Pinnacle Ridge processor. The core clock speed when the screen shot was taken was 3.4GHz, which goes along with rumors that say the base clock will be 3.0GHz, all-core will be 3.4GHz and max boost will be 4.0GHz.

The screenshot of the Cinebench test results show that they ran the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X processor a number of times with clock speeds between 4.00 and 4.20GHz. The best performance came at 4.12GHz and that was a score of 6399cb. Since the 4.2GHz result is the lowest we are going to take a wild guess that they are overclocking here and that some of the results might be with the CPU thermal throttling. HKEPC said that an Corsair H150i PRO RGB 360mm water cooler was used and that to hit 4.12GHz they needed to up the CPU Core voltage to 1.38V.

These are impressive results as our Intel Core i9-7980XE 18-core, 26-thread processor scores 3409 stock and then when overclocked up to 4.9GHz on all cores we were able to score 4740. Our stock clocked AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X scored 3055 and when overclocked up to 4.1GHz on all cores we were able to get up to 3535. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X processor looks like it will be about 80% faster than the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and that is insane. Something tells us that the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X won’t be available for $749.99 like the 1950X can be purchased for right now.
