Samsung SSD 970 PRO and 970 EVO Drives Launched At Lower Pricing
The Samsung SSD 970 Series finally became available for purchase at major retailers today and we just learned that Samsung is cutting the Suggested Retail Pricing (SRP) for both the Samsung SSD 970 PRO and Samsung SSD 970 EVO series! Samsung is saying there is a slight price difference, but it’s a pretty hefty price slashing from where we are sitting. For example the Samsung SSD 970 PRO 512GB drive was priced at $329.99, but now has been reduced by $80 down to $249.99. That is a 24% price cut! The Samsung SSD 970 PRO 1TB model has had its price slashed by $130 or almost 21%. That brings the price per GB down to around $0.49 on the 512GB model and 1TB models.
We made up a quick table that shows the original pricing when the product was announced and the new prices on the first day of product availability.
Samsung 970 Series Device | Old Price | New Price |
Samsung 970 PRO 512GB | $329.99 | $249.99 |
Samsung 970 PRO 1TB | $629.99 | $499.99 |
Samsung 970 EVO 250GB | $119.99 | $109.99 |
Samsung 970 EVO 500GB | $229.99 | $199.99 |
Samsung 970 EVO 1TB | $449.99 | $399.99 |
Samsung 970 EVO 2TB | $849.99 | $799.99 |
The Samsung SSD 970 EVO series also saw some price reductions ranging from $10 all the way up to $50 depending on the drive. The Samsung SSD 970 EVO 250GB drive got the smallest price drop of $10, but that not puts it at $109.99 or $0.44 per GB. The 500GB, 1TB and 2TB drives are now priced at $199.99, $399.00 and $799.99, which puts the cost at $0.40 per GB.
You can read out review of the Samsung SSD 970 EVO 1TB SSD and Samsung SSD 970 PRO 512GB drive if you’d like to see how either performs. The Samsung SSD 970 PRO 512GB drive has sequential speeds of 3500 MB/s read and 2300 MB/s write and 4K Random Read/Write performance of up to 370k IOPS read and 500K IOPS write. These are truly fast drives, but the PCIe NVMe market is super competitive right now and Samsung is obviously getting a little more aggressive with pricing than they likely have been in years past. We can likely thank the WD Black 3D NVMe series and the HP SSD EX920 M.2 series entering the high-end market with lower price points than Samsung.
If you are looking to buy one of these drives today we discovered that Newegg and B&H currently have them available for purchase, but Amazon still doesn’t have them listed.
Update: 05/07/2018 @ 10am CT – Amazon has some of the drives listed, but not all are at the new SRP. Here are links to the 970 EVO 250GB, 970 EVO 500GB and 970 EVO 1TB.
