The devs behind Pokmon Go are using the game to encourage fans to pick up trash in the real world for Earth Day. Niantic is working with Playmob and local NGOs to host cleanup events around the world. There will be special events in the game to celebrate the cleanup efforts.

Niantic says that if 1,500 players are picking up trash players will unlock 2x Stardust when catching ground, water, and grass type Pokmon. If 3,000 players are picking up trash players will earn 3x Stardust for the same types of Pokmon.

Niantic also says that if there are no events near you, but you know an NGO that might host an event to submit your request. Niantic and The Pokmon Company are also making a financial contribution to Mission Blue to celebrate Earth Day.

In all, there are 27 events scheduled in 12 countries via ten partners. Niantic is also encouraging fans of Pokmon Go who cant be at an event to make a financial donation to Mission Blue.
