Microsoft Can Ban Accounts for Offensive Language

If you frequent Microsoft services like Xbox, Skype, and others you will want to watch your language in the future. IGN reports that a terms of service update specifically points out that Microsoft can ban your account for what it deems offensive language. While the terms of service have been updated, Mike Ybarra has said on Twitter than there is no policy change for Xbox live.

That seems to indicate that Microsoft could always ban you for offensive language. Microsoft told IGN, “We are committed to providing our customers with safe and secure experiences while using our services. The recent changes to the Microsoft Service Agreements Code of Conduct provide transparency on how we respond to customer reports of inappropriate public content.”

The new code of conduct page will go live on May 1. Section 5 of the summary of changes reads, “In the Code of Conduct section, weve clarified that use of offensive language and fraudulent activity is prohibited. Weve also clarified that violation of the Code of Conduct through Xbox Services may result in suspensions or bans from participation in Xbox Services, including forfeiture of content licenses, Xbox Gold Membership time, and Microsoft account balances associated with the account.”

The wording on the new terms of service is vague. What worries some is that it sounds as if gamers might not have to be reported for offensive language, Microsoft might be trolling records of your use of its services to find indication you have violated them and then ban your account. Microsoft does say they don’t monitor the services in their entirety and make no attempt to do so.
