Belgium Says Loot Boxes are Gambling

The Belgium Gaming Commission launched an investigation last week that aimed to determine if Loot Boxes were a form of gambling. The decision was handed down this week and the Gaming Commission has decided that Loot Boxes are indeed a form of gambling.

PlayStationlifestyle.net quotes the Gaming Commission saying, “The mixing of money and addiction is gambling,” the Gaming Commission declared. Belgiums Minister of Justice Koen Geens also weighed in, saying, “Mixing gambling and gaming, especially at a young age, is dangerous for the mental health of the child.”

Geens also noted that he hopes developers will remove all micro-transaction where you dont know what you are getting in all of Europe. The reason that Loot Boxes have been deemed gambling stems from the randomized nature of the boxes.

The gaming Commission doesn’t want micro-transactions or season passes to be banned. Similar investigations into loot boxes are being conducted in The Netherlands.
