Corsair Releases PBT Double-Shot Keycaps Kit For 50 Bucks

If you have a Corsair keyboard and have been yearning for higher quality key caps to replace the ABS ones included with the keyboard, your needs may have finally been answered. Corsair has released a set of 104/105 key PBT Double-shot key caps that are compatible with several of their mechanical keyboard offerings. Coming in at a $49.99 MSRP and available in both black or white colors, the Corsair PBT Double-shot key caps will let users take their keyboards to the next level. The Corsair PBT Double-shot key caps have redesigned legends that will allow LED lighting to shine through evenly and have been developed to last for years and years of use. Right now, the Corsair K95, K70, K65, K66, K63 and STRAFE keyboards are compatible with the new PBT Double-shot key caps. Because they are compatible with the non-standard bottom row on the aforementioned Corsair keyboards, the new Corsair PBT key caps are not going to work with non-Corsair keyboards. The CORSAIR K68 is not supported and we should point out that on the CORSAIR K95, K95 RGB & K95 RGB PLATINUM the macro keys are not included.

Many ABS key caps are laser-etched and the characters on them are subject to fading over time, as the laser etched surface of the character wears down. ABS Doubleshot key caps are available to protect the characters on the cap from wear, but due to the nature of ABS plastic, they are still subject to losing their color and developing “shine” over time, a condition where the legend area of the key cap has worn so much that the texture shines in comparison to the rest of the key cap. A PBT Double-shot keycap isn’t subject to this type of wear, since PBT is a much stiffer, more durable plastic than ABS. PBT key caps also tend to have a less smooth, textured surface to them that offers a unique feeling over typical ABS keys, but whether the PBT surface is better to type on is totally subjective and up to individual users.

Personally, I have PBT caps on my Ducky One TKL RGB keyboard and own a Ducky PBT mouse and love the way that the PBT plastic looks and feels. PBT caps also tend to offer more of a solid bottoming-out sound when typing, whereas ABS keys are lighter and more clicky. The old IBM Model M keyboards used PBT keycaps and the main reason the industry moved away from them was cost versus ABS keycaps. As you can see, PBT key caps still aren’t cheap to produce, with the Corsair sets coming in at $50.
