AMD Ryzen Threadripper Overclocked to 5.1 GHz on LN2

When AMD was showing off Threadripper this week in Los Angeles they brought in Amit Mehra and Bill Alverson for an overclocking demonstration to show just how far this processor could be pushed with liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling.

The pair used AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X ($999 SRP) processors for the demo. Base clock on the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16-core, 32-thread product is 3.4 GHz with precision boost to 4.0 GHz. This demo was done on an AMD X399 ‘Whitehaven’ reference board and not a channel board from ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte or MSI.

Using AMD Ryzen Masters and the AMD X399 reference board they managed to get one of the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16-core processors up to 5,187.62 MHz on all cores! The bus speed was left at 100 and they cranked the multiplier all the way up to 52x. The boards DDR4 memory was run at 2,133MHz with CL15 timings and a 1T command rate.

With these settings they managed to get a score of 4,122 cb in Cinebench R15, which blows the stock score of around 3,050 cb out of the water.

In our review of the Intel Core i9-7900X processor we managed to overclock it up to 4.9GHz and only got 2,551 cb in Cinebench R15, so this is a monster score from a single-CPU. AMD believes that the channel boards will do better when they come to market next month when Threadripper launches on August 10th, 2017!
