AMD Ryzen Threadripper Processor Gets Delidded
We were traveling yesterday, but noticed that Overclocker der8auer delidded one of AMD’s new Ryzen Threadripper processors. It looks like he was traveling when he was delidding a Threadripper processor and needed to use a a bunch of razor blades and a couple soldering guns to get the massive lid off.
Once the lid was removed der8auer found four dies under the AMD Threadripper lid when he was expecting just two. How is AMD deactivating parts of EPYC to make Threadripper? From what we have heard AMD has disabled or is using spacers on two of dies. We also heard that the two active cores are diagonal to one another and are not side by side. We’ll have to look into why that may be once the product launches as this processor died in the delidding process and der8auer couldn’t confirm that.
We were going to show you the Threadripper Delidding video that was on YouTube yesterday, but it appears that it was taken down. der8auer has a new video up saying that AMD made him pull it down for the time being.
