Trademark Suggests Nintendo 64 Classic in the Works

I think that Nintendo was surprised at just how popular its original throwback game console, the NES Classic Edition, was. That game console sold so fast that many gamers weren’t able to lay hands on one without having to pay way over the MSRP to a scalper. Nintendo let that console run for a while despite originally planning it only for the holiday season of the year it launched.

Nintendo has more recently announced another miniaturized retro game console called the Super Nintendo Classic Edition and while it’s not yet available for pre-order in the US, gamers are already salivating over getting hands on that product. Before that SNES Classic console is even in the hands of gamers a new rumor is making the rounds that makes it look very likely that Nintendo is already working on its next retro edition game console reports Polygon.

This new retro console was tipped by an image of a Nintendo 64 controller that turned up from Nintendo in the European Union Intellectual Property Office. The controller art is very simple, but clearly shows the Nintendo 64 controller that many gamers grew up holding for hours at a time. I loved the Nintendo 64 personally, I liked using the analog stick for Goldeneye and always hated where it was located on that third leg.

The Nintendo 64 controller image was found along side images of the NES controller and the SNES controller, both of which have already been spied in their own smaller, retro gaming consoles. Sure, Nintendo could just be working to protect its IP with this filing, but the company is clearly on a retro bent and gamers are loving it so a N64 Classic Edition would certainly be no surprise. I’ll admit the thought of some Goldeneye makes me happy.
