The First Single Slot GTX 1070: the Galax GeForce GTX 1070 Katana

Galax (a producer of graphics cards, SSDs, RAM, and gaming peripherals) has claimed that they have just released the first single slot GTX 1070 GPU: the Galax GeForce GTX 1070 Katana. The GPU’s ability to fit in a single slot (rather than dual) is made possible due to its width being 16mm thin. This could make it easier to SLI on motherboards with two slots. It performs just slightly higher than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition with a base clock speed of 1,518 MHz and a boosted clock speed of 1708 MHz, compared to the Founders Edition GPU’s base of 1506 MHz and boosted 1683 MHz.

For cooling, Galax’s GeForce GTX 1070 Katana utilizes a turbo radiator that sucks in air and blows it out of the back end (allowing for unwanted heat in the chassis to be pulled out) and uses a copper cooling fin to help regulate their temperatures. Their website claims that “it can maintain consistent performance even in thermally challenging scenario,” which would definitely be nice to see as witnessing a successful graphics card perform competitively against their full sized counter-parts could create a demand for more single slot GPUs. Although it is unlikely since the average GPU consumer sticks to single graphics cards, any change in one direction is better than none at all. Otherwise we’d be stumped without innovation.
