Spotify Offering Some Users Upgrade to Lossless Hi-Fi Service
Spotify is one of the most popular subscription music services out there with hoards of users. The streaming audio service is reportedly testing out a new lossless version of its streaming service for audiophiles who want the best sound quality available. The new subscription tier is called Spotify Hi-Fi.
The upgrade cost is another $5 per month on top of your normal subscription and you get some cool stuff with the upgrade. The main feature is higher quality streams with lossless quality audio at 44.1KHz 16-bit CD quality. The files with this upgrade plan aren’t compressed promising the ability to hear the audio as the artists intended.
Obviously you will need the ears and the headphones to take full advantage of this new higher quality stream. I have never been able to tell the difference between standard streams and lossless with the cheaper headphones I tend to buy. The extra $5 per month gets users all the premium features that Spotify offers, discounts on limited-edition vinyls, and one free vinyl record.
I’ll admit to not following Spotify that much since I’m not really into music, but I had no idea it was offering vinyl. I had plenty of records back in the day and the first time I was forced to beat my brother down was when he stepped on my Funkytown 45 and broke it.
Lossless audio fans now have another option for lossless music, tidal was the only firm offering it before. It’s worth noting that users who tried to sign up for the new plan were greeted with an error message stating the service was unavailable. That makes me wonder if the invites were sent out early by accident.
