DRAM Price Rally May Continue Into Q2 2017

Global DRAM demand is still strong than the DRAM supply and that will cause prices to continue to increase according to Pei-Ing Lee, president for Nanya Technology in comments made to DigiTimes. Mr. Lee sees the situation ending in the second half of 2017, but it should be noted that he mentioned that the rally could potentially stabilize and not necessarily decrease. With Intel Kaby Lake processors just being released and AMD Ryzen processors right around the corner this information is useful to the DIY community that may be considering DDR4 memory kits in the near future.

“The global DRAM supply will continue to fall slightly short of demand in the second quarter”, said Lee, adding that the company’s DRAM average sale price will rise in both the first and second quarters.

With prices expected to increase you might want to pull the trigger on at least the DDR4 memory kit of your liking and forget about the prices you saw last summer where you could pick up a G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-2400 memory kit for $69.99 all day long. That memory kit will now run you over $103, which is an increase of 48%.

Another example would be the Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) 3200 MHz DDR4 memory kit that is very popular with the enthusiast community. Back in July 2016 that kit was $81.99 from Amazon and now they are selling the same exact kit for $117.99. This is a $36 or a 44% price increase in just six months!

We aren’t sure how much demand Ryzen will have on the market, but we know many AMD users that have been waiting years and this is the first AMD desktop platform to support DDR4 memory and that will likely cause increased demand on an already tight DRAM supply. Just a friendly heads up to our readers that DRAM pricing isn’t going to get better and is predicted to get worse the first half of this year!
