Roccat Kone[+] Gaming Mouse Review
By
Introduction
Many gamers, especially PC gamers, have high demands for the hardware they use while gaming. Whether they require the best GPU and monitor they can afford to push the best visual feedback or the best surround sound speaker setup or headphones to allow them to hear the location of enemies as much as possible, gamers are looking for any edge they can find to give them an advantage over the competition, be it human or computer.
Of all the peripherals available for PC gamers, a mouse might be the most important. It is perhaps the most visceral and vital connection the gamer has with the game, yet many gamers still find themselves using a very “generic” mouse. Companies like Razer and Logitech have been marketing high-end mice to gamers for years, and very few companies have been able to make any dent in the stronghold those two companies hold on this segment. A European company named ROCCAT aims to change that fact.
ROCCAT is a German company that was founded recently in 2007. The company is completely focused on developing accessories for computer gamers. ROCCAT cites close collaboration with gamers as one of their strengths, enabling them to produce high quality keyboards, mice, and headsets. The ROCCAT Kone gaming mouse was the company’s first product, released only in Europe.
The ROCCAT Kone[+] is one of the first products released in the United States from this Hamburg-based company. The ROCCAT Kone[+] gaming mouse sells at an MSRP of $99.99, however as of the time of this writing it is out of stock at both Newegg and Amazon. The standard ROCCAT Kone (non “plus” version) is currently available for $79.99 from Amazon (note: before publication, the listing disappeared from our pricing engine; we will update this link when available), however standard Kone has “only” a 3200 dpi sensor, no Easy-Shift[+] Button, and less onboard memory. We will look at these features in further detail later in this review, but for now, let’s continue to look at the features provided with the Kone[+].
ROCCAT Kone[+] Features:
- 6000 dpi laser sensor
- 8 mouse buttons & 4-direction scrolling wheel
- “Easy-Shift[+]” Button Duplicator
- 4 LED lights
- 576KB onboard memory to store 5 game profiles with macros
- 4 easy to clip-in weights for individual weight adjustment
- Ultra quiet low friction mouse feet
- 1000Mz polling rate
- 1ms response time
- 2m USB cable
This mouse has all the features on paper that can keep a gamer happy, but let’s take a closer look at these features to see how they work.
