Instagram Announces Plans To Sell Your Photos & You Can’t Opt Out!

By

Instagram has shocked and outraged many users with an update to its terms of service that will let the company sell users’ photos to other companies. The update will become effective January 16, and states that “A business or other entity may pay” Instagram to display users’ photos and other details “in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.” This means that Instagram can sell your images and you get nothing! Even worse, there is no easy way to opt out as even minors are subject to the new terms: “If you are under the age of eighteen …. you represent that at least one of your parents or legal guardians has also agreed to this provision.” Users can’t opt out of the new provisions.

The only way to avoid them is to delete your Instagram account altogether. Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out. You can use an app called Instaport to will download your entire Instagram photo library to a zip folder on your PC. Once you have all your images you can delete your account and look for an alternative. Has Instagram committed suicide with the service changes?

Some or all of the Service may be supported by advertising revenue. To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you. If you are under the age of eighteen (18), or under any other applicable age of majority, you represent that at least one of your parents or legal guardians has also agreed to this provision (and the use of your name, likeness, username, and/or photos (along with any associated metadata)) on your behalf.
