Nokia Fakes Lumia 920 PureView Camera Promotional Videos and Photos
Yesterday, we reported on Nokia’s release of the impressive new Windows Phone 8 Lumia 920 and 820 phones. In particular, the headline feature of the Lumia 920 is its high quality PureView camera, which takes much better videos and photos than those on competing smartphones. Nokia have created some promotional videos and stills to show it off, but they’re not what they seem, since they all turned out to have been faked! Nokia actually used professional cameras, a full photo crew and lighting to take these instead of the actual phone, making the promotional shots quite misleading, or in other words, they lied about its capabilities, making the PureView camera look much better than it really is.
If one looks carefully at the two photos below, it can be seen that in the supposed Lumia 920 picture, which looks much more vibrant, the colour balance is off and the lighting is coming from the wrong direction. Similarly, in the video of two people riding bikes, there’s a glimpse in a passing van window of the professional camera crew that’s really behind the camera. Nokia has since confessed to this fakery and apologized. Not a good way to launch a new product range that’s intended to get Nokia back in the highly competitive smartphone game is it?
The faked Lumia 920 video called the photo into questions. A quick glance at the Lumia 920 OIS sample photos in the video and elsewhere in Nokia’s marketing materials looked suspicious. In the second half of the video Nokia shows images shot with OIS turned off and on. Just about everything’s blurry in the images with OIS turned off. Then, magically, everything is sharp in the equivalent images with OIS turned on. What caught my attention is that studio lighting appears from nowhere in the ‘OIS On’ images and the scene is simply too steady compared to the ‘OIS off’ images.
