CMI First To Mass Produce 4Kx2K High-Definition Panels

By

Chimei Innolux (CMI) will apparently be the first mass producer of 4Kx2K HD panels in the world. They have already been producing 56-inch 4Kx2K HD panels for medical applications and will now begin production of 50-inch and 65-inch HD panels as well. According to Wang Jyh-chau, STSP branch President, six Chinese LCD TV vendors have already designed TVs around such HD panels and will be unveiling them in the peak sales period starting in early October. This just so happens to be at the same time CMI will have their first mass produced 4Kx2K panels ready for sale.

The production of the 4Kx2K HD panels for TVs in both 39-inch and 50-inch sizes is expected to exceed 2 million units in the third quarter of 2012. CMI has also started producing 58-inch panels as of August 2012. Overall the shipments of TV panels in 39-inch, 50-inch and 58-inch sizes has made up over one-third of all TV panels according to Wang Jyh-chau.

The production of 4Kx2K HD panels is for product differentiation in the second wave following the offering of TV panels of two new sizes, 39 and 50 inches, in 2011, Wang indicated. Monthly shipments of 39- and 50-inch TV panels will exceed 2.0 million units in the third quarter of 2012, Wang noted. In addition, CMI began production of 58-inch TV panels, another new size, in August 2012, with a 5.5G glass substrate cut into two such panels at using nearly 95% of the substrate, Wang pointed out.
