The build-up for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 launch officially began today, August 29, with Samsung having shown the first official Windows Phone 8 device, the ATIV S smartphone. Main specs of this phone are, 1.5GHz dual core CPU, 1GB RAM, 8MP autofocus rear camera and 1.9MP front-facing camera, 16GB or 32GB storage options with MicroSD slot for expansion and a 2300mAh battery. Samsung didn’t reveal price or availability for this phone.

The official launch date of Windows Phone 8 a source said, will be October 29, three days after Windows 8 and will be held in either San Francisco or Los Angeles with handset availability a week or two later.

The launch event for Windows 8, Windows RT and the Surface tablet on the other hand, will be held in New York starting October 25, with the new hardware and software being officially available at the stroke of midnight on the 26th.

A source of mine privy to Microsoft’s event plans, who asked not to be named, just shared with me dates and tentative locations for a number of Microsoft’s upcoming launches. Some of these we suspected; a few we knew.
