Unity’s Game Engine to Bring Premium 3D Games to Windows Phone 8

By

Unity Technologies has announced at its annual Unite conference (this year in Amsterdam) that it’s 3D game engine will support both Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. The company claimed that support would be present from Unity version 4.

Unity is a multiplatform 3D engine that runs under Windows, Android, iOS and all three main console platforms, allowing premium quality 3D games to be written for those platforms. UT CEO David Helgason announced that both Windows operating systems will be supported, “The Unity community has been asking for access to Windows Phones and have been eagerly anticipating the release of Windows 8. We’re happy to announce that we will support both.”

Unity claims that it’s currently “working hard” with Microsoft to bring deployment options for both Windows platforms to developers “as soon as possible”, claiming the two operating systems are “among the most eagerly awaited platform additions within the Unity development community”. This game engine might give a very useful boost to Windows Phone 8 powered phones in the marketplace. The full keynote speech is below.

“We are excited that the Unity community will now be given the opportunity to develop world class titles for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8,” added senior director of Windows App Marketing at Microsoft, John Richards.

“The number of high quality Unity-authored games for the PC, Xbox, and mobile devices already created is staggering and were looking forward to seeing these products appear in the Windows Store and the Windows Phone Marketplace.”
