Dotcom’s Mansion Stormed Over Fears of ‘Internet Doomsday Device’

As if the whole takedown of MegaUpload back in January couldn’t be any more shady or farcical, the FBI has just topped it: why exactly was Kim Dotcom’s mansion raided? Because the FBI believed that Dotcom “carried a device with him to delete servers around the world”. I kid you not. To “delete servers”…

This was revealed during a judicial review at the New Zealand High Court, Auckland. Further, they heard that all the stops had been pulled out to raid the place as hard and fast as possible to stop Dotcom from using it. This involved many police vehicles, including a helicopter and around 30 police officers took part in the raid. Needless to say, this non-existent “internet doomsday device” was not found. Unsurprisingly, Dotcom’s lawyer, Paul Davison, QC, was highly critical of this raid calling it a “disgraceful performance” continuing, “What this comes down to is a woefully incompetent and inept performance by the New Zealand police at all stages and at all levels of this operation. Those responsible for planning are shown to be deficient in their judgment to a serious degree.”

Of course, the New Zealand police don’t think so, with Detective Inspector Grant Wormald, who oversaw the operation for the Organised and Financial Crime Agency, (OFCANZ) saying that the raid was an example of the “thorough and professional execution of a search warrant” and that speed was of the utmost importance to prevent Dotcom from using the alleged device.
