Windows 8 Slated For October Release
At Microsoft’s annual Worldwide Partner Conference, Windows Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer Tami Reller shared new information regarding the general release of Windows 8. The new OS is on track for Release to Manufacturing (RTM) in the first week of August, with Software Assurance enterprise customers being able to get it around then. At the same time, the Microsoft Store for Metro apps will go live, with developers then being able to start charging for their software. At the moment, all the apps are free.
The big news of course is exactly when Windows 8 becomes generally available: at the end of October. The release will also see the availability of new Windows 8 and Windows RT PCs available for purchase, along with various upgrade options. Windows 8 will be available in 109 languages across 231 markets worldwide.
Finally, Tami announced a new milestone with Windows 7. There is no question that Windows 7 is the bestselling operating system in history and the number of licenses sold keeps growing. In her remarks, Tami announced that more than 630 million Windows 7 licenses have been sold to date and that more than half of enterprise desktops today are running Windows 7.
