AMD Working On Radeon HD 7930, 7970GHz Edition & 7970 X2 SKUs
We already reported on AMD having the 7970 GHz Edition in the works, as well as Powercolor and HIS both readying 7970 X2 graphics cards, now it seems AMD is working on a “Tahiti LE” SKU, the Radeon HD 7930. While their was little news from AMD at Computex this year, it seems the company is still hard at work on the Radeon HD 7000 series. The Radeon HD 7930 will fit in somewhere between the 7870 and 7950, however with the performance of both GPUs being so close it seems this new SKU is less about hitting a specific price point and more about salvaging Tahiti chips that didn’t make the grade. Other than the fact the latest beta drivers mention the Tahiti LE, we have no clear info on what its specifications would be. It’s performance on the other hand will most likely fall in with the 7870 but may have a larger VRAM buffer of 3GB, however this is still just speculation. Regardless these three GPUs should help AMD remain competitive against NVIDIA’s products. The Radeon HD 7970 X2 should go toe to toe with the GeForce GTX 690, the 7970 GHz Edition should end up performing well against the GTX 680. The rest of AMD’s current lineup should fair well against NVIDIA’s subsequent lineup. For those looking for a new graphics card, holding off a little longer may prove prudent. The Radeon HD 7970 X2 should launch in August, the HD 7970 GHz Edition should appear sometime in June and finally the HD 7930 should launch sometime in the Quarter three of this year if reports are to be believed.
The first case would probably make the Radeon HD 7970 “GHz Edition”, on which was previously reported and which is now part of the PC Games Hardware has been reconfirmed. AMD is easy with this progress in the 28nm production in the form of a higher clock chip advantage – the previously mentioned 1000 MHz for this purpose may not even have to be the end of the line, AMD is aiming to supposedly up to 1100 MHz chip clock. This would be the GeForce GTX 680 even back then can be (slightly) behind him, after earlier benchmarks have been able to demonstrate that a tie is sufficient for about 1,000 MHz chip clock.
