Sony Announces They Sold 4.2 Million Playstation 4’s In 2013

After Xbox released their 2013 sales figures, Sony has responded by announcing that they sold 4.2 million Playstation 4’s (PS4) in 2013, soundly beating the 3 million figure that Microsoft released. Sony is obviously happy with the sales figures such that the C.E.O. of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Andrew House saying, “The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn’t be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network. After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014.”

Xbox one has had less time on the market than the PS4 and has been released in fewer countries as well so I would expect to see some evening out in terms of sales in the coming months. Either way, both the PS4 and the Xbox One are struggling to keep up with demand which is a good sign for the industry regardless of the fact that the PS4 is 1..2 million up on the Xbox One.

Sony is also downplaying the significance of their early lead on the Xbox, with Sony Computer Entertainment America’s (SCEA) vice president of marketing saying, “It’s [how important leading Microsoft in sales is] really not. We look atit introspectively. The 4.2 million numberis important because it gets us further towards our goal. And that goal is the largest install base we can possibly get”.

While the public humility on Sony’s behalf seems to be universal, I guarantee there were at least a few excited first bumps coming from the Sony brass when Microsoft released their Xbox One sales information.
